the best time of year for kentucky family photos

Hi, sweet friends! It’s been so long! Let’s see if we can revive this little blog. My goal in everything I do is to help “my people” to see how loved they are and I want for this space to be an extension of that. I want you to come here and be filled with love, find support in capturing and living your most love-filled life, as well as find the answer to any question you may have regarding your lifestyle family photo session…and, in turn, create an even more love-filled environment for your session. So…let’s do it!

One question I often get asked is “when is the best time of year for family photos?” My answer may surprise you, but let’s get one thing straight first.

Any time of year is the perfect time of year for family photos.

Seriously. I do not want us putting it off. There is something beautiful to remember about every season of weather and of life. In fact, I think it would be a great idea to switch up the season from year to year. You know your family has different traditions and routines for different parts of the year. Let’s capture it! We may just need to duck inside for most of the winter photos.

Now that we got that out of the way, I have a confession and possibly an unpopular opinion.

Summer is my favorite time of year for family photos.

Here are three reasons why summer is the best time of year for family photos.

1. I love how casual summer tends to be. From the softer fabrics to the lighter colors. To bare feet, sandals, or rain boots. In a big open field at sunset or hanging out in your backyard or a family farm. 

2. I LOVE the activities we get to do at our summer sessions. To running through the sprinklers and enjoying smores by the fire or time out on the lake or in the pool. It’s messy and beautiful and I love it.

3. The light. Oh, the light of summer. So warm and so much of it. There’s a reason why our moods tend to improve with the warmth of spring and summer.

Fall is my second favorite time of year for family photos.

Now, I think this is most people’s favorite. It is widely known as family photo season. 

There is one reason only that I love the Fall for family photos…

There is a very small window of time where the leaves are gorgeous here in Kentucky and the temperatures haven’t quite dropped. But that window is very small and at the very end of October and beginning of November. When the weather is just right, it is magical. But it is also very unpredictable. I’ve had bitterly cold weather and just right weather, both at this exact time of year. If you do want to try and get in that window I would advise booking as soon as possible as many photographers book up months in advance for those coveted dates.

What about Christmas card pictures and gifts?

Everyone loves to use Fall as a time to get updated photos for Christmas cards and gifts, but I truly believe you can have photos from any time of year to serve as Christmas card photos and Christmas gifts!
